Liberty of London for Target….Oh Emm Geee!

I can’t believe I totally missed sharing this fabulous news; about a month ago I found out that Liberty of London was collaborating with Target and debuting a home collection line.  Make sure you run to your nearest Target on Sunday, March 14th to snag the very inexpensive pieces.  I for one will hold the urge to “splurge” away. The BF and I are currently apartment shopping and saving money is most important right now.  I won’t even get into the struggles in apartment hunting for two, that’s a whole post of its own.

No More Needle and Thread!

Birthday Time!

This year my dear momma surprised me a little early and bought me a new sewing machine…I’m so embarrassed to say, but over year ago my vintage Singer went caput when I tried to run some very hard denim material through it. The poor thing didn’t stand a chance.  I actually still have it. I can’t toss it. I’m emotionally attached to it as it provided me comfort when I was unemployed.  It was just me and my machine!

So in efforts to part with the old and make room for the new super nifty Singer I’m finally breaking ties with it.  I’m so excited to start sewing in the comfort of my own home.  I’ve been relying on my mom’s sewing machines which leads me to two conclusions:

A) She was sick of me using her machines and hogging her garage
B) She saw that I really needed one because driving just to alter all my vintage finds was a bit ridiculous.

Whether it be A or B I don’t care. I’m just super happy to have a machine again.

I’m off to sew something!

You know that I could use somebody…

Thank the Good Lord for President’s Day (is that what we celebrated this past Monday?) and the extra day off.  The BF and I drove to Santa Barbara for a Valentine’s weekend.  It was awesome!

Perfect weather, tons of good food, and lots and lots of booze!

xoxo,

Ev

Vintage Lovers Rejoice Sale!

It’s finally here!

For a few weeks now I’ve been preparing myself mentally and now physically for this sale.  It started of as a crazy thought then it transferred to a Craigslist post and then the email’s started pouring in (okay, not really- more like steady rain).

Anyone that knows me is aware that I collect vintage clothing and accessories hailing from the early 1960s to the early 1990s (DISCLAIMER: 1990s not super vintage but nice prints). Yes, I have a problem! I can admit that some of this stuff was bought simply for the purpose of “I can’t pass this up!” knowing it wasn’t my size and it would never fit me; for some I have to be a little bigger and others a little smaller.

That being said; Casa de Cruz has turned into a mini vintage store.  This weekend from 10:00a-3:00p my door will be open for Los Angeles shoppers and NOTHING is over $20….YES, you read right, TWENTY DOLLARS!

After some cleaver rearranging of my very small and cozy apartment THIS IS “THE STORE”:

84 Days Left !

How did I not know about this? As much time as I spend on “the internets” one would think I’d be all over this.  It’s charitable, fashion forward, inventive and above all inspiring.  This is Sheena Matheiken (and even though she doesn’t know me, I feel like I know her and definitely see a little of me in her).  I’m not just posting this because she’s a cutie patootie or because her outfits are super cute.  Sheena is the founder and creative director behind The Uniform Project.  What is this you ask? Let me tell you, 1 dress, 365 days.  Why? For the schooling of children living in impoverished neighborhoods in India.

In her word’s here is the cause:

“Starting May 2009, I have pledged to wear one dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. Here’s how it works: There are 7 identical dresses, one for each day of the week. Every day I will reinvent the dress with layers, accessories and all kinds of accouterments, the majority of which will be vintage, hand-made, or hand-me-down goodies. Think of it as wearing a daily uniform with enough creative license to make it look like I just crawled out of the Marquis de Sade’s boudoir.

The Uniform Project is also a year-long fundraiser for the Akanksha Foundation, a grassroots movement that is revolutionizing education in India . At the end of the year, all contributions will go toward Akanksha’s School Project to fund uniforms and other educational expenses for children”

I’ve been going through her “dailies” and gosh is she inventive and super cute.  She was raised in India and from one former uniformed scholar to the other - Congratulations! Going through her “dailies” I kept fascinating over her shoe collection.  I myself own over 200 pairs of shoes and I kept wondering if she was a size 5- 5½ like me (sometimes I squeeze [no pun intended] into a 6).  I think she looks like a 6.

Anywho, back to the really important stuff; THE CAUSE.

It takes $360 dollars a year for a child’s education in India; that’s less than a dollar a day. This is what the government spends and Akanksha will spend the exact amount:

“Akanksha has vowed to spend the same amount on every child in the slums – not a penny more, not a penny less – to afford them a better, more holistic education”

Earlier today I bought some Famous Amos Cookies from the vending machine for $0.70 to think that $0.28 more will make the difference in a child’s life is unbelievable but true.  Please join Sheena in her edu-fashion struggle and donate if you can.

My Favorite Seven:

FYI- I’m in no way affiliated with Sheena or the Akanksha Foundation. I like you stumbled upon this while browsing the internet and have been inspired to pass this along.  Thank you.

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

My workspace; where I plan to spend my time updating and becoming more creative!

Hello Dear Friends,

It’s been several months of hiatus.

To be honest, I almost gave up on this blog but just a few weeks ago I decided, “what the heck?” it’s my blog and I can do whatever I want, and right now; I want to write.

I am suddenly inspired by my surroundings again; my supportive family, my caring friends and my wonderful boyfriend.  It amazes me the power of relationships and I’m not talking about boyfriend/girlfriend relationships; just human relationships in general.  2009 wasn’t the greatest year for me as I got sick a lot (like every other month), work was hell (no raise or bonus - wait, I lie! I got $140 as a “thank you for sticking with us” which felt more like pity money than “thank you” money), financially; I felt insecure and still do as I currently hold a position that I no longer care for and wish there was a way out and to top things off, I broke my iPhone and finger right before the ball drop into 2010.

Let’s just say that with all insight, 2009 couldn’t have gotten any worse and although this might sound a bit hypocritical it was also a good year for me.  Aside from colds, budgeting, broken phones and limbs my relationships with certain people grew stronger.  I reconciled with my sister, a relationship that became tarnished far before I could understand “certain things.” My dear friends welcomed a beautiful baby boy and I had the privilege of spearheading their baby shower (along with my wonderful girlfriends).

  • I became a better girlfriend (I think?).
  • I became a better daughter
  • I became and understanding sister
  • I became a supporting friend
  • I stopped eating red meat
  • I lost several pounds (yipee)
  • I worked at a wine bar and got let go (they said, “slow times” but I think it meant “fired”)
  • I finished decorating my apartment

In the mist of obscurity it’s often hard to recognize the good in all that happens.  I had a nervous breakdown last year and although I was ashamed at first, I’m not anymore.  I took control of my life and the turmoils that were contributing to that negative sphere.  As most know, I spend my nine to five in a high rise building filled with people that for the most part I cannot relate to.  I felt trapped by the surrounding walls of my cubicle, I felt lost and didn’t know if this was going to be it for me. With the help of all those around me I realized this is not it for me my calling does not include a cubicle, suits, high-rise buildings or monochromatic offices.   I see a rainbow in 2010 and hopefully when I reach the end I find myself in a shining light with colorful surroundings, a new job and a little extra cash in my pockets! I’m back!! 2010 is calling for a difference and I’m up for the challenge.  I’ll be 2-5 and promise myself to be in the best shape; physically, mentally and emotionally.

Cheers to keeping promises!

XOXO,

Eve

p.s. To my loving boyfriend….Thank you! I can’t picture being able to get through 2009 without you.  They say to not lay all your eggs in one basket but I don’t mind laying mine in yours.

“My dreams they keep a hold of me”

I’ve been meaning to share some of the pictures from my vacay in Solvang, CA.  If you’ve ever seen Sideways, then you’ve seen Solvang, it’s a really small town with a whole lot of character.  Perfect for two young love birds trying to get away from the LA madness! Our drive was beautiful, special and the scenery didn’t do it justice it totally made the three hour drive seemingly less irritating (it also helped that I didn’t drive).  My pictures are kind of crappy due to my lame digital camera but Vicster can’t seem to get his shit together and upload the pictures he took with his rad camera (love you honey).

I also included some pictures of the Annenberg Space for Photography in Century City.  My little cousin came out to have a very late lunch with me earlier this week and we managed to take a peeksy at the photography housed there.  Oh my! Was I flabbergasted by the amazing and touching pictures I saw which features “Pictures of the Year International.”  If you’re in LA please take a moment to check it out, it’s FREE!!!

Please pardon the crappy images as I took them with my iPhone and I think the guard must have seen me in my “not so discreet” pose because he wouldn’t stop following us around…hahaha! Makes these lame pictures so much more exclusive.
